Summary

The Registered Respiratory Therapist is responsible for the respiratory activities for the adult, geriatric, and pediatric patient receiving services from Methodist Home Care Services Respiratory Therapy program. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:

Associate’s Degree in a Respiratory Therapy program that is approved by the CAAHEP or CoARC.

Minimum of two years of experience performing respiratory care in a hospital or homecare setting. 

  • Current licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the state of employment

 

  • Current credential as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or has grandfathered credential prior to July 1, 2002 from the National Board of Respiratory Care.

 

  • Current BLS  Certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of training concepts, methods, and techniques in respiratory care. 
  • Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as patient records or training materials.
  • Prepared by education, training, or experience to work with the adult, geriatric, pediatric, or neonate patient.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own work flow.
  • Possession of a current Tennessee drivers' license. 

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Sets up and/or visits home care adult, geriatric and pediatric patients using CPAP, ventilators, or oxygen therapy to ensure equipment is in good working order.
  • Provides ongoing patient assessment through observation of patient and records, response to therapy and reports findings accurately making referrals to appropriate disciplines as needed.
  • Provides educational development through guidance and teaching and serves as a technical resource person to patient, patient's family, physicians and Associates regarding respiratory care and equipment.
  • Recognizes and reacts appropriately to environmental safety factors and performs preventive and routine maintenance and/or minor repairs on respiratory care equipment and instruments.
  • Participates in and attends departmental/hospital continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Assists Assistant Director - HME and other home care staff in sales and marketing activities.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
