Summary

Performs waived laboratory tests, to include specimen handling and processing. Collects blood specimens for laboratory tests on outpatients by venipuncture or capillary puncture technique. Serves as a lead to Lab Assistants by providing training, answering questions, solving problems, and researching issues. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

Education/Experience/Licensure

  Education/Formal Training Work Experience Credential/Licensure
Required: High School diploma or equivalent Minimum of three years of laboratory experience with strong knowledge of laboratory procedures for specimen handling and sample preparation. Minimum 1 year of experience as a Lab Assistant or similar position in MLH Physician Enterprise. N/A
Preferred: Completion of a Phlebotomy program

Demonstrated leadership and preceptor experience for new hires and/or students.

Certified Phlebotomist
Substitutions Allowed: N/A 5 years of experience working as a Lab Assistant or similar position, with demonstrated leadership and preceptor experience for new hires and/or students. N/A

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  • Proficient in laboratory venipuncture and capillary collection procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of barcode label equipment, basic printers and copiers.
  • Demonstrable leadership potential. Ability to lead others through processes and training steps.
  • Proven record of providing excellent customer service both internally and externally.
  • Strong attention to detail skills.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' work flow.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory testing, to include specimen handling and processing. Operates various types of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and analyzers to prepare samples.
  • Performs venipuncture without requiring support and instruction from others in an outpatient setting.
  • Provides training to new hires and current associates on all collection and lab procedures. Develops a training and teaching program for new Lab Tech associates, students and those who need remediation. Documents competency check-offs for new Lab Tech associates and submit documentation to manager.
  • Provides guidance to Lab Assistants to include answering questions, solving problems, and researching issues.
  • Performs clerical duties as required.
  • Maintains inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment in the laboratory areas according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation and implements measures to ensure physician practices,DNV and other quality standards are met. 
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency.
  • Understands, supports, and applies departmental/hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
