Summary

Performs preparatory portions of laboratory tests, to include specimen handling and processing, and the use of Laboratory Information System. Some laboratory testing performed within scope of practice under CLIA’88.  Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:

High School diploma or equivalent

Minimum of three years of laboratory experience with strong knowledge of laboratory procedures for specimen handling and sample preparation.

PREFERRED:

Completion of a Phlebotomy program.

One year laboratory experience preferred with strong knowledge of laboratory procedures for specimen handling and sample preparation.

  • Strong knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge in laboratory quality assurance procedures.
  • Demonstrates effective teamwork.
  • Strong attention to detail skills.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrates quality customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Performs pre analytical and post analytical portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act.
  • Performs clerical duties as required.
  • Maintains inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment in the laboratory areas according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality assurance, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, safety, competency, and policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

  • Invasive and non-invasive patient contact throughout the shift.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids.
  • Must be able to react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate both orally and written to other individuals.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 25 lbs. periodically throughout the shift.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit in one place, squat and kneel periodically throughout shift.
  • Must be able to reach, bend, and twist periodically throughout shift.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • Use of hands for gripping and squeezing, as well as repetitive hand to wrist motion.
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination.
  • Normal eye-motor coordination, manual dexterity and visual perception.
