Summary

Responsible for directing the Faith & Health program as a key member of the facility’s leadership team. Provides consultation to hospital leadership and MLH system regarding health and spiritual care issues.  Directs and implements the integrated Faith & Health Division strategic plan and goals. Provides oversight, guidance, and direct pastoral and spiritual care to patients, family members, associates, physicians, volunteers and others according to the standards of the Association for Professional Chaplains. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:

Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) or theological studies from an accredited AATS seminary.

Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) by Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, or comparable exp.

At least 2 years’ experience in a church, synagogue, temple or other faith based ministry.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Staff Chaplain or CHN Navigator.

Experience supervising staff.

Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) from one of the following:

 

Assoc. of Professional Chaplains (APC)

National Assoc. of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)

National Assoc. of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ordination, licensing, or commissioning by one’s faith group and ecclesiastical endorsement (or eligible for endorsement) by a recognized faith group for ministry as a Chaplain in a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and minister to the specific spiritual needs of persons in crisis.
  • Knowledge of congregational and denominational structures.
  • Knowledge of community health resources.
  • Administrative skill and experience in supervising staff.
  • Functional knowledge of the religious principles of major faiths.
  • Ability to work effectively with persons of diverse religious, cultural, and racial backgrounds.
  • Ability to function as an integrated member of site leadership team.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as a key member of the facility leadership team responsible for directing the Faith & Health program. Provides consultation to hospital leadership and MLH system regarding health and spiritual care issues.
  • Provides oversight, guidance, and direct pastoral and spiritual care to patients, family members, associates, physicians, volunteers and others according to the standards of the Association for Professional Chaplains.
  • Directs the activities of Chaplains and other Associates as assigned; monitors performance and clarifies work expectations, clinical assignments, and assists with goal setting; promotes cooperation among individuals and groups. 
  • Develops and implements processes through recruitment, orientation, training, education, and evaluation to ensure that the competence of all staff members is assessed, maintained, improved and demonstrated throughout their employment.
  • Participates in the recruitment of candidates for placement in the Clinical Pastoral Education program.
  • Prepares capital and expense budgets and demonstrates fiscal accountability for department resources including human resources, equipment, and supplies.  Ensures area of responsibility achieves outcomes within allocated resources.
  • Enhances and strengthens working relationships between the Congregational Health Network (CHN) and MLH Spiritual Care Services.
  • Coordinates and provides educational resources for area churches, clergy, and community organizations.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
  • Possible exposure to body fluids, infectious diseases, as well as hazardous and poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react in emergency situations.
