Summary

The Certified Wound Care Nurse strives to improve patient outcomes via prevention, staff knowledge, and care of patients with ostomies, wounds and/or continence issues.  Functions as an expert resource in preventing pressure ulcers and providing wound, ostomy, skin and continence care.  Acts as a consultant to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and reassess the care of patients with pressure ulcers, wounds, stomas, or other dermal disruptions.  Collaborates with physicians, surgeons, and other care providers to provide evidence based care. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:

BSN or MSN required.

 

Three years professional nursing experience as an RN.

 

 

Registered nurse with current license to practice professional nursing in the state where work is performed.

 

Current certification through WOCN in at least two of three categories: Wound, Ostomy, and Continence.  A specific category or additional category may be required depending on the patient population served.

 

Effective June 1, 2018: All new hires and transfers are required to have BLS certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of the wound, ostomy and/or continence care specialty in accordance with professional standards of practice.
  • Ability to apply nursing knowledge and problem solving techniques.
  • An effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with Associates, patients, and physicians.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment in a professional area.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of work flow.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to handle and administer medications as needed.
