Summary

A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who practices both autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of health care providers on the interprofessional team to deliver high-quality, holistic, evidence-based anesthesia and pain care services. The CRNA cares for patients at all acuity levels across the lifespan in a variety of settings for procedures including, but not limited to, surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic and pain management. Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the AANA Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.

  • Licensed as Registered Nurse to practice professional nursing in the state of employment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to perform clinically as a nurse anesthetist in the facility setting on a regular basis.
  • Ability to operate, use, and interpret data from a wide variety of equipment to perform anesthesia care as well as necessary perioperative or operating room care to support the safety and well-being of the patient while they are under the direct care of the CRNA.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with various clinical staff and other disciplines.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population served.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to the population-specific and age specific needs.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents the preanesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient. Obtains informed consent for anesthesia and related services.
  • Reviews, requests, and orders laboratory/diagnostic studies.
  • Selects, obtains, orders, and administers preanesthetic mediation or treatment.
  • Develops and implements an anesthesia care plan. Provides postanesthesia follow-up and care.
  • Selects, obtains, prepares, and uses equipment, invasive and non-invasive monitors, supplies, and medications for the administration of sedation, anesthesia, and pain management services; perform safety checks as needed.
  • Selects, orders, obtains, and administers analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services.
  • Performs all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation.
  • Initiates and administers post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system. Initiates and administers respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the postoperative period.
  • Evaluates the patient’s response to anesthesia and surgery; take appropriate corrective action during the postanesthesia period.
  • Discharges the patient from the postanesthesia care unit.
  • Implements acute and chronic pain management modalities.
  • Manages emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Places and manages regional anesthetic techniques, as delineated by clinical privileges.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 200 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
