Summary

Performs evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric patients with disorders of the visual system, with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movement disorders. Performs strabismus evaluation including motor testing, evaluation of Fresnel and spectacle prisms, convergence exercises, and orthoptic treatment. Responsibilities also include infant and pediatric vision assessment, retinoscopy, and refraction. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years post-grauate training from an accredited orthoptic  training program.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of binocular vision and eye movement disorders
  • Demonstrates ability to perform infant and pediatric vision assessments
  • Demonstrates ability to perform manifest and cycloplegic refractions in children
  • Knowledge of various testing including: Visual Acuity testing, Lensometry, Retinoscopy,
  • Refraction, Color Vision, Pupil and Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy, Tonometry, and Visual Fields

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.

  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance and push and pull up to 250 lbs.
  • Ability to sit in one place, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend throughout the shift.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
