Short Description

The Advanced Practice Provider with the Methodist Acute Care Surgery Team will work with the entire multidisciplinary team to provide critical care. This will include daily assessments, documentation, and developing plan of care.

Position 
To provide medical care and treatment within established scope of practice to acute care services and critically ill patients in the SICU and PACU as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician or under supervision of a Board-Certified Physician. The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral or arrange for the same medical coverage by a physician who is pre-approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners in the same manner as the collaborating physician of record. To coordinate plan of care, discharge and specialty referrals as appropriate to meet the age specific needs of the patient. To plan and coordinate health care education for patient, family and other health care providers as needed. To perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments. To interpret, analyze and evaluate patient’s medical record and social data. To perform and/or assist the physician with procedures per collaborative agreement. To coordinate and participate in performance improvement activities.

The Physician Assistant is responsible for planning and directing the delivery of primary heath care and health education programs in association with Methodist Healthcare Primary Care Associates (MHPCA).  The individual will provide care and health education for patients and their family. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients in the assigned center according to approved protocol and acceptable standards.
  • Performs necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures according to written, approved protocols developed with and under the supervision of the Medical Director/collaborating Physician.  Participates in the design and revision of protocols.
  • Collaborates with Medical Physician and ancillary personnel as appropriate to promote quality care for patients.  Makes referrals as appropriate.
  • Recognizes and reacts appropriately to environmental safety factors related to patient care.
  • Understands, applies and supports practice policies, procedures, goals and standards.
  • Develops strong partnership with patients, family members, fellow physicians/nurses and support staff.  Focuses on high patient and family satisfaction and retention.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Exposure to excessive heat or cold as required.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • May require handling or administering of narcotics.
  • Ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to sit in one place, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motion, as well as using hands for gripping and squeezing.
  • Ability to use hands and feet together for repetitive coordinated motions.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.

REQUIRED:

Master's degree in nursing with an Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification or graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required.

At least Three years of general nursing experience of clinical practice at the RN level or higher.

 

Registered Nurse with current license to practice professional nursing in the state of employment and/or Advanced practice licensure / certification as required by state of employment.

 

Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
