Summary

Under the supervision of the Pathology Director, the Grossing Histotechnician is responsible for the grossing of small tissue specimens and performing histological procedures such as embedding, microtomy and staining for Pathological diagnosis in the histology laboratory. Responsible for receiving, accessioning, processing, aliquoting and preserving  clinical specimens prior to analysis and distributing specimens to analytical areas for analysis. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated competency in histotechnology methods and techniques in Fixation, Microtomy, Processing, and Staining.
  • Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as laboratory reports.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment in a professional area.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' workflow.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Performs grossing of small tissue specimens.
  • Performs histological procedures for pathological diagnosis such as Processing, Embedding, Microtomy and Staining. Prepares tissue specimens using technical Laboratory procedures including special techniques, abnormal findings, and stat requests within established time limits.
  • Receives, separates, accessions, labels, and distributes all types of clinical and anatomical specimens from all hospital patients to Laboratory areas for analysis.
  • Completes technical laboratory procedures on a timely basis according to departmental regulations, CAP requirements, JCAHO and other MH standards of Laboratory analysis.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation activities and demonstrates initiative by suggesting or helping implement measures to ensure hospital, CAP, JCAHO, and other quality standards are met.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency.
  • Participates in or conducts as requested in-service education for department or hospital staff.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
