Summary

The Case Technician is responsible for ensuring the operating room is set up properly with supplies, instruments, and equipment. This position also facilitates case preparation and acts as a liaison between Operating Room, Sterile Processing, and OR Logistics. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

Education/Experience/Licensure

Education/Formal Training Work Experience Credential/Licensure

Must demonstrate education/training through one of the following methods under TN Code Ann. § 68-57-101(a):

  • Holds a current national certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a Surgical Technologist (CST).
  • Completion of a CAAHEP accredited program in surgical technology or completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technologists in the armed forces, CAAHEP accredited hospital, or CAAHEP accredited ambulatory surgical treatment center program and
  • Successfully completed the surgical technologists NBSTSA certifying exam.
  1. Any student who completes a surgical technology program that is in the process of becoming CAAHEP accredited on July 1, 2006, shall be considered a graduate of a CAAHEP accredited program.

  • Effective 1/5/2024, all current associates that are taking the 3-month surgical tech course will have 12 months at the end of the course to complete their certification.

 

  • Surgical Techs grandfathered under the state of TN law are exempt from national certification

 

  • Current BLS Certification.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of work flow.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations as would be acquired through completion of high school.
  • Ability to read and follow written instruction as would be acquired through completion of high school.
  • Demonstrates ability to problem solve in relation to the procedure being performed.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as a contact between Operating Room, Sterile Processing, and OR Logistics to ensure availability of supplies and instrumentation for surgical cases
  • Ensures next day and same day add on Surgical cases are pulled accurately and completely
  • Takes initiative to identify instrumentation that will need to be reprocessed between cases and communicates to SPD
  • Returns unused supplies and instrumentation to proper location
  • Participates in perioperative materials management by communication with the Logistic Coordinators and SPD Manager when stock needs replenished, and maintains orderliness of shelves by straightening stock, dusting
  • Uses First In/First Out methods to minimize outdates. Rotates stock as needed.
  • Checks supplies and instrumentation for expiration dates and integrity of packaging before placing into use or returning to inventory
  • Maintains principles of aseptic technique according to hospital policy and procedure and AORN standards.
  • Recognizes, monitors and responds appropriately to environmental safety factors.
  • Promptly alerts management to opportunities, needs and problems within the unit regarding policies, procedures and regulatory readiness.
  • Understands, applies, supports and follows department/hospital policies, procedures and standards at all times.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
