The Surgical Pathology Technician II assists in the preparation prior to, during, and following an autopsy by performing various duties as required for a Pathologist to conduct an autopsy and as required for release of a body to a funeral director.  This position is also responsible for preparing, accessioning and assisting the Pathologists/Pathology Assistant in the prosection of surgical tissue specimens and for performing other technical duties in the Histology Laboratory. Education/Formal Training

Work Experience




High school Diploma or equivalent.





Associate’s degree in Science or related field

Minimum of 6 months experience in a laboratory support area AND one year of autopsy training acquired through formal education.








  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods for preparing preserving solutions related to retention and shipment.
  • Ability to learn the use of surgical instruments used in autopsy maneuvers (such as knives, scalpels, scissors, saws, chisels, etc.)
  • Ability to use and recognize the anatomical names of body organs, structures, sites, etc. and have knowledge of anatomy as applied to the conduct of the autopsy.
  • Must be proficient in the use of aseptic technique.
  • Ability to perform autopsy job functions independently.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations, and read and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with co-workers, physicians, and other outside professional staff.
  • Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of workflow.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Assists pathologist in performing a variety of preparatory duties for autopsies.
  • Maintains, cleans, and stocks autopsy suite.
  • Responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies and procedures.
  • Prepares, processes and accessions tissue specimens for surgical cases.
  • Retrieves, stores, and discards tissue and other specimens.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
