Title:  Phlebotomist -North - PRN Job

The Phlebotomist I is responsible for performing standard laboratory venipuncture and capillary collection procedures from assigned inpatients and outpatients, labeling the specimens completely and accurately, and transporting specimens to the appropriate location in the laboratory.  Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.



Education/Formal Training

Work Experience




High school diploma or equivalent and completion of phlebotomy training course










In lieu of phlebotomy training course, must have at least six months of work experience.





  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of barcode label equipment, basic printers and copiers.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations such as needed to calculate maximum blood collection.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and develop plans for efficient workflow.
  • Ability to learn various computer modules and applications (such as Cerner, Pathnet, and Carenet).
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff, nurses and physicians.
  • Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of work flow.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Correctly identifies patients and collects appropriate specimens for requested assays and labels specimens completely and accurately.
  • Processes specimens and delivers them to the appropriate location within the lab.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation and implements measures to ensure hospital, DNV, and other quality standards are met. 
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency. 
  • Understands, applies, and supports departmental/hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Adheres to the laboratory policy for dress code.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
