Summary

The Senior Histology Technician, Certified is responsible for performing histological procedures for pathological diagnosis. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in The Methodist Mission, Vision and Values.

Education/Experience/Licensure

  Education/Formal Training Work Experience Credential/License
REQUIRED:            Must demonstrate education/training through one of the following pathways. Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program Minimum of two years of full time experience in a histopathology or histology
  • Must be certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) through ASCP Board of Registry is required.
  • Must have Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) through ASCP Board of Registry OR meet all eligibility requirements to complete the qualification process.
  Associate's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry OR 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry  Minimum of four years of full time experience in a histopathology or histology
  • Must be certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) through ASCP Board of Registry is required.
  • Must have Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) through ASCP Board of Registry OR meet all eligibility requirements to complete the qualification process.
  Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry Minimum of two years of full time experience in a histopathology or histology
  • Must be certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) through ASCP Board of Registry is required.
  • Must have Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) through ASCP Board of Registry OR meet all eligibility requirements to complete the qualification process.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated competency in Fixation, Microtomy, Processing, and Staining, Specials Stain, and Immunohistochemistries (IHC).
  • Skill and proficiency as an instructor as acquired by experience.
  • Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as laboratory reports.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment in a professional area.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' work flow.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day direction and guidance to Histotechnicians & Histotechologists.
  • Collaborates with technical staff in organizing daily workflow.
  • Serves as a resource for answering questions, researching issues, and resolving problems.
  • Performs histological procedures for pathological diagnosis. Prepares tissue specimens using technical Laboratory procedures including special techniques, abnormal findings, and stat requests within established time limits.
  • Completes technical laboratory procedures on a timely basis according to departmental regulations, CAP requirements, JCAHO and other MH standards of Laboratory analysis.
  • Follows established protocol or consults supervisor on difficult procedures and abnormal findings.
  • Determines acceptability of and reviews results for accuracy and corrects errors before presenting completed specimens to pathologist.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation activities and demonstrates initiative by suggesting or helping implement measures to ensure hospital, CAP, JCAHO, and other quality standards are met.
  • Performs preventative and routine maintenance, quality control tests as indicated by department policies.
  • Performs with appropriate frequency and documents results of quality control tests as required by regulatory agencies demonstrating appropriate corrective action for quality control failures.
  • Performs with appropriate frequency and documents instrument calibration and method validation at required intervals.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency.
  • Participates in or conducts as requested in-service education for department or hospital staff.
  • Attends elective educational offerings to enhance professional performance.
     

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
