Title:  Genetic Counselor Trainee Job

Provides expertise in clinical genetics to counsel, communicate, and support families on the implications of genetic disorders.  Assesses risk, investigates and identifies potential genetic problems, interprets and analyzes information, inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence.  Provides case management and advocacy.  Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values. 



Education/Formal Training

Work Experience




Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling.



  • Certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling.


  • Licensed to practice as a genetic counselor in the state where work is performed.




One (1) of experience in field or related field.







  • Thorough knowledge of current theories and principles of human genetics and best-practice counseling techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with peers, medical staff, patients/families and other constituents involved in patient care.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct all activities in accordance with professional ethics and values.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Assesses the risk of occurrence or recurrence of genetic conditions.
  • Provides counseling for patients/families to facilitate understanding of disease or birth defect.
  • Recommends genetic testing in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Advocates on behalf of the patients/families for the protection of the patient’s health, safety and rights.
  • Performs other job functions as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
