The Transfusion Services Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Laboratory Director and Manager in implementing, directing, and controlling activities, operations, and programs and quality management standards in Transfusion Services and Point of Care testing of a suburban hospital laboratory in accordance with MLH and professional standards of practice.  Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.



Education/Formal Training

Work Experience





Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Medical Technology or a natural science.










Minimum of five years’ experience under a Pathologist in a clinical setting (non-supervisory). 












  • Must be currently licensed in the State of Tennessee as a Laboratory Supervisor OR must meet TN licensure requirements for Laboratory Supervisor and obtain within 90 days of hire. During the 90-day period, laboratory supervisor duties (as defined by the State) must be delegated to a licensed Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) from ASCP Board of registry within two years after date of hire.




Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Registry as a Medical Technologist from the ASCP Board of registry preferred.








  • Ability to communicate verbally with a diverse patient and Associate population, as well as, various levels of Associates, managers, and physicians.
  • Ability to lead and motivate individuals and groups of people toward the accomplishment of work and organizational goals.
  • Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials, such as technical manuals.
  • Ability to understand complex regulatory requirements such as FDA, AABB, CAP and State as they pertain to Blood Bank and Point of Care Testing.
  • Skill in negotiating with and between individuals and groups of people including Associates, management, and physicians
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment in a professional area.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others’ work flow.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Assists the Lab Director in planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling section/bench activities and operations in Transfusion Services and Point of Care to meet department goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates inventory and purchasing ensuring cost effectiveness and accurate charges.
  • Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine, specialized technical procedures, and Point of Care testing.
  • Monitors all regulatory compliance for the Laboratory.
  • Evaluates job performance in Transfusion Services, ensures competency of staff, and recommends various personnel actions including hiring, promotions, and corrective actions.
  • Responsible for training associates and maintains and evaluating competency assessments.
  • Maintains department based quality monitoring and evaluation documentation and records to ensure that hospital, AABB, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, CLIA, State of Tennessee, and other quality and safety standards are met.
  • Performs Medical Technologist duties as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination and use of hands for gripping or squeezing as well as repetitive hand and wrist motion.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • Periodic exposure to high levels of noise throughout the shift.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
